Uphold women’s right to safe shelter, dignity, and economic participation by providing a protective, enabling environment where housing, skills support, and participatory management converge to promote independence and wellbeing.
Sakhi Niwas opened in Keonjhar in 2023 as a working-women’s hostel supported by DMF Keonjhar, established to provide safe, affordable accommodation for women migrating to the mining belt.
The facility has a 50-bed and is designed to ensure secure living conditions that enable women to work, save, and plan for their futures. Its core purpose is to uphold women’s right to safe shelter, dignity, and economic participation.
The hostel offers round-the-clock security, subsidised meals, and basic amenities that prioritise privacy, hygiene, and safety. Regular health checks and structured routines support residents’ physical wellbeing, while communal spaces and organised cultural and civic observances foster social cohesion and a sense of belonging. Resident feedback sessions and an elected EC committee ensure that governance, rules, and services remain responsive to women’s needs.
Sakhi Niwas integrates livelihood and life-skills support with housing: on-site training in tailoring and parlour services and linkages to local employment opportunities help residents translate stability into income and independence.
The hostel’s governance mechanisms, grievance redressal and participatory decision-making aim to make services sustainable and resident-led. Overall, Sakhi Niwas functions as a protective, enabling platform where safe shelter, community support, and skills development converge to help women live and work with dignity.
