Hatching Hope & OSED:

Empowering 34 villages in Ghatagaon through livestock, community organization, and market access for sustainable livelihoods.

Supported by Heifer International and facilitated by WOSCA, this program is transforming goat and poultry rearing into structured, income-generating activities for smallholders and landless households. Implemented across 34 villages in Keonjhar’s Ghatagaon block, it builds resilient value chains through better animal health, science-based rearing, and market linkages.

Over the past years, the initiative has reached more than 3,000 farmers through 197 trainings, equipping them with skills in goat care, financial literacy, and producer group governance. Women have taken center stage, with 4,700 participants engaging in Gender Justice sessions and nearly 1,000 SHG meetings strengthening inclusion and leadership. Families have gained tangible assets—68 goats and 159 poultry units distributed, shelters repaired, and kitchen gardens established—while animal health interventions have dewormed nearly 20,000 goats and reduced mortality rates by 10–12%.

Market access has expanded through the Maa Laxmi Producer Company, which facilitated goat trade worth ₹1.90 lakh, while SHGs accessed over ₹88 lakh in credit to strengthen household economies. As a result, 227 new farmers have entered goat and poultry rearing, 256 households report higher monthly incomes, and 2,799 families now grow kitchen gardens to improve nutrition and resilience.
